Record of the Kagoshima Suppression, 1877

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting women warriors at battle in Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. In the center, women rush forward wielding naginata and spears as they face the oncoming Imperial Army troops, one of the soldiers gripping his rifle like a club above his head. Another beauty gallops ahead on horseback at right, holding her weapon in her outstretched hand. At left, rebel samurai storm across an arched stone bridge to meet the attacking Japanese soldiers, while flames rise in the distance, sending plumes of orange smoke across the night sky. A terrific depiction of the wives and daughters of the rebels who joined in the fight. A striking historic subject.
