Gaman Sonja

Series; Sixteen Wonderful Considerations of Profit, circa 1845

Gaman Sonja - Charming design from a rarely seen Kuniyoshi series, with each design pairing a beauty with a rakan, a Buddhist disciple who has achieved nirvana. Here, the rakan Gaman Sonja appears in the hanging scroll at upper right, holding a candle with a dragon emerging from the smoke. The wizened old man grins as he hunches forward, a yellow halo of light surrounding his head. The beauty smiles as she bends over to inspect a basket full of fish and leaves on the floor, a slender pipe in her hand. She wears a short plaid coat over in intricately patterned brown kimono tied with a blue obi. Her hair is pulled back into a large knot adorned with a few simple hairpins. A few books are scattered on the ground nearby. An attractive design with nice bokashi shading in the background.
