Illustration of the National Industrial Exposition, 1881

Comments - Terrific illustration of the Second National Industrial Exposition held in 1881 in Ueno Park. The Meiji Empress appears in the center, sheltered beneath a purple umbrella held by an attendant. The Emperor stands among a group of palace ladies-in-waiting at right, wearing a military dress uniform and plume hat. The elegant brick Fine Arts Museum building fills the background across the top, with the enormous Shojo Fountain in a large plaza before it, and a tall clock tower below. The scene is beautifully framed by blossoming cherry trees strung with red paper lanterns. An intriguing look at this historic event, with lively color and wonderful detail. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 28" x 14"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. Some rubbing and soiling at edges. Some minor curling. A couple small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
