Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Yui: The Sisters Miyagino and Shinobu, 1843 - Handsome print from a collaborative Tokaido Road series jointly designed by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III. In the foreground, the sisters Miyagino and Shinobu practice martial arts in preparation for avenging the death of their father. The beauty at left uses a wooden practice sword as her sister blocks the blow with a chain stretched between her hands that is attached to a sickle. Their sleeves are tied back with sashes, keeping them out of the way. Above, Hiroshige depicts a view of Yui, with the Tokaido Road winding up a steep mountain path with Mt. Fuji rising in the distance. The rounded hill top along the right side of the road is dotted with trees, some hanging precariously along the side overlooking the sea below. A great design with fine bokashi shading.
