Ichikawa Danjuro in Musume Dojoji, 1896

Comments - Terrific Kunichika triptych depicting Ichikawa Danjuro as the shirabyoshi dancer Hanako in the famous dance-drama "Musume Dojoji." She comes to Dojoji Temple hoping to dance before the new temple bell. No women have been allowed at the temple since the death of the monk Anchin at the hands of the beauty Kiyohime. Unaware that the beauty is actually the spirit of Kiyohime, the monks allow her to perform, and are soon overcome with strange sensations. Here, she strikes a pose with one sleeve in the air, looking solemnly up at the bell as she dances, waving a fan in her other hand. Her red kimono is patterned with cherry blossoms and flowing streams, and she wears a tall court cap. The temple bell hangs at left, with bands of confetti-like shapes running across the background. A great image from this famous tale.
