Two Brave Sailors of the Matsushima Putting out Fire with Their Garments

Series; The Spirit of Japan, 1894 - 1895

The Spirit of Japan - Handsome portrait of one of the heroes of the Sino-Japanese War from a series titled "The Spirit of Japan." The artist Okura Koto was a student of Ogata Gekko, and his style is very reminiscent of his master's, drawn with fluid calligraphic line work and rendered in soft color. These bold designs depict soldiers in action or striking heroic poses. An interesting and very rarely seen series.

Image Size - 12 3/4" x 8 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Most prints have thinning at edges, repaired. Some additional thinning. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
