Couple and Giant Fish

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a giant fish sprawling on the floor between a couple. The courtesan at left smiles over her shoulder as the fish (an actor in a fish suit) strikes a dramatic pose. The commoner grins as well, his checked kimono hanging open at the front and his arms firmly folded across his chest. Two musicians playing shamisen sit on a platform at left, with cherry blossoms framing the sky overhead. An interesting and unusual subject, nicely detailed with fine bokashi shading in the background, and cloth embossing in the white areas of the checked kimono.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 18 3/4" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Two panels, not attached at the seams and lightly toned throughout. Slight rubbing along edges with remnants from previous backing on reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
