Comments - Terrific illustration of fighting at Kumamoto during the Satsuma Rebellion. At right, a leader in a red coat gives directions to a young man, gesturing with his hand. The rebels are positioned behind rows of large wooden barrels, crouching behind them as they fire their guns at the enemy. Clouds of smoke billow up into the dark night sky. Wonderful detail in the expressive figures, clothing, and weapons, with burnishing in the black robes and fine bokashi shading in the smoke and sky. A fascinating historic subject.
