Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Two Generals, 1882

Comments - Interesting uncut page featuring two chuban images of famous samurai. In the top scene, an elderly general with a wrinkled face sits on a folding stool observing the battle below. He wears armor over a purple robe and a horned battle helmet, and holds a tasseled command baton. The bottom design shows a warrior on horseback gripping a bow, turning to look back at a samurai encampment where a bonfire sends smoke up into the sky. Nicely detailed with fine bokashi shading and vibrant color.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 8" x 13" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Some rubbing and soiling at edges. Some minor ink bleed. A few small holes and some thinning repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
