Yoshitsune Crossing the Sea at Daimotsu Bay, 1847-1852

Comments - Fantastic design of the ghosts of Taira Tomomori and his fallen warriors rising up out of the sea to sink Yoshitsune Minamoto's ship as he crosses the sea at Daimotsu Bay. The ghastly spirits emerge from the raging water with weapons drawn, bobbing along the crests of the waves. Some have skull-like faces devoid of flesh while others leer with open mouths and flowing hair. The young Yoshitsune and his men fight valiantly from the ship, while in the prow, the warrior-monk Benkei holds up his prayer beads to calm the ghosts. At upper left, a shadowy row of ghostly skeleton samurai in gray is visible along the horizon. An incredible scene from this famous tale, rendered with amazing detail and creativity. A terrific choice for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.
