Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Spring, 1853

Series; The Four Seasons

Spring, 1853 - Charming depiction of Prince Genji and his companions on a spring evening. He stands at left smiling happily, holding his sleeve to his chest. He wears a gray coat trimmed with a print over a matching kimono tucked into pleated hakama pants. In the center, a young princess sits on a cushion, holding a roll of paper and a brush as she prepares to paint. The woman beside her mixes ink on a stone slab, while the beauty at right displays a small branch adorned with a bird and golden ornaments. The rooms look onto a garden surrounded a lake, the night sky framed by a blossoming plum tree. A lovely design, beautifully detailed with a subtle burnished check pattern in the gray area of Genji's coat, embossing in the white kimono trim, and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.
