Series; Imaginary Comparison of Rising Sumo Wrestlers

Nakamura Fukusuke I as Shirafuji, 1858 - Great kabuki portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as the young sumo wrestler Shirafuji. Her grins as he stares to the side, an ornate pipe in his hand. He wears a brown kimono with a bold white pattern, the robe hanging open at the chest. His hair is parted in the center, and smoothed back into a topknot combed forward. Alternating striped of dark blue and a tie-dyed textile pattern create a striking backdrop behind the large figure. A handsome design from this rarely seen series, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Horizontal center fold. Stitching holes along left edge from previous folio binding, small loss at upper right edge, repaired, blends well. Creasing, slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
