Samurai Threatening a Beauty, 1883

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of a samurai threatening a beauty with his sword, gripping the weapon above his head with both hands. The woman attempts to defend herself with a koto, tossing the instrument up to block the pending blow. At right, a warrior draws his sword with a tight-lipped frown, preparing to intervene in the attack. The verandah behind the figures overlooks a lake, the view framed by colorful Japanese maple leaves, the wind blowing the beaded tassels of the lantern hung overhead. An interesting subject, attractively colored, with a subtle burnished pattern in the beauty's purple kimono.
