Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Scandalous Love of Osome and Hisamatsu, 1862

Comments - Handsome illustration from a kabuki play about a pawnshop apprentice Hisamatsu, who scandalously falls in love with his master's daughter, the beautiful Osome, who returns his affection even though she is betrothed to someone else. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke I as Hisamatsu, Ichikawa Fukutaro as Osome, and Nakamura Tsuruzo as Aburaya Gen'emon, the owner of the pawnshop and Osome's father. Gen'emon grimaces unhappily as he looks over his shoulder, an open book in one hand and a pipe in the other. Osome kneels before him, smiling coyly and tilting her head. Hisamatsu eavesdrops behind the screen at left, a worried expression on his face. Nice expressive figures with a handsomely detailed interior setting.
