Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from the 47 Ronin, Act 6, 1854

Comments - Interesting scene from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the classic kabuki play based on the story of the 47 ronin. This print shows a scene from Act 6 at Yoichibei's home in the country. At left, the brothel owner Ichimonjiya Saibei has arrived to collect the beauty Okaru, who has willingly sold herself to the brothel to provide her father, Yoichibei, with money to join the vendetta against Moronao. He stands outside the doorway, waiting beside the palanquin with a worried expression on his face. He holds a pipe in one hand and a pipe case and tobacco pouch in the other, and wears a black and white striped kimono that is shaded white to add dimension to the folds. Inside, a man eavesdrops beside a sliding panel, frowning unhappily with his arms folded firmly across his chest. From left, the actors are Arashi Kishisaburo III and Ichikawa Kodanji. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.
