Comments - Handsome Osaka triptych illustrating a scene from the kabuki play "Godairiki Koi no Fujime" (Five Great Powers that Secure Love). The drama tells the story of the warrior Satsuma Gengobei, who falls in love with the geisha Kikuno. The evil samurai Sasano Sangobei tricks Kikuno into writing a letter to Gengobei severing their relationship, which later results in tragedy when the jealous Gengobei kills Kikuno. From left, the actors are Nakayama Nanshi II as Kikuno, Nakamura Utaemon IV as Gengobei, and Mimasu Daigoro IV as Sangobei. Here, Kikuno leans forward on her knees with a pleading expression, tying to explain the misunderstanding as Gengobei waves his arm at her in a dismissive manner, frowning sadly. At right, Sangobei raises his fan high above his head with an angry expression, his other hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The room opens onto a lovely night view of a garden surrounded a pond. A great design with a nicely detailed setting, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
