Prince Genji Writing a Poem Slip, 1857

Comments - Attractive triptych depicting Prince Genji seated on a red floral spread in an elegant mansion, writing a poem slip. He smiles as he pauses with the brush in mid-air, watching a couple in conversation at right. The beauty leans forward with her hand touching a bamboo vase of flowers while the man raises his hand in a stopping gesture. At left, a seated woman hands a scroll to a beauty wearing a sheer black outer robe, her hair pulled back into a long ponytail flowing over her back. Colorful lanterns decorated with tassels and beads hang overhead. A nicely detailed subject with attractive color. Includes fine bokashi shading in the sky and in the young nobleman's green pants.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Stitching holes along one side of each panel from previous folio binding, a few small holes, small losses at corners, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling and rubbing, faint stain in upper right of right panel. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
