The Quarrel over Reversed Oars, circa 1839 - 1841

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainers gathered at an encampment overlooking the ocean. Just prior to the naval Battle of Yashima in 1185, Kajiwara Kagetoki suggested that the ships be equipped with reversed oars to allow them to move backwards if needed. Yoshitsune reacted angrily, accusing Kajiwara of cowardice. The nobleman leaps to his feet at left, frowning with displeasure, his hands clenched as one of his retainers pleads with him to remain calm. At far right, Kajiwara lunges forward, slowly drawing his sword. Several samurai try to intervene, standing between the pair with arms outstretched in alarm. Yoshitsune's loyal retainer Benkei stands in the center, clutching his naginata and glaring threateningly, his head swathed in a monk's cowl. Each of the men is dressed in full armor, and the encampment is surrounded with tent walls bearing the Minamoto family crest. A wonderful design, full of lively color and detail. A terrific subject for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.
