Original Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904) Japanese Woodblock Print
Matron Eavesdropping, 1862

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Bando Hikosaburo V as Iwafuji, an evil senior lady-in-waiting who is jealous of her junior, the lovely Onoe. Here, the matron eavesdrops on a conversation, standing outside the doorway with an unhappy scowl, her arms folded across her chest. She wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric pattern, tied with a blue brocade obi. At lower right, a porcelain teapot sits atop the red hot coals in a brazier, a folding fan on the floor nearby. A terrific expressive figure with a handsomely detailed interior setting.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. One small hole, repaired, blends well. Slight creasing. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
