Meiji Emperor and Empress Listening to Music

Comments - Terrific image of the Meiji Emperor and Empress enjoying a musical concert by ladies of the palace. Dressed in elegant formal robes, the couple faces each other as the women play flutes, a reed pipe called a sho, and a gong hung from a black lacquer frame. The emperor wears a black robe with a delicate burnished leaf pattern and phoenix medallions, a tall court cap tied under his chin with a purple cord. A screen featuring a peacock beside a rushing waterfall and colorful blossoms fills the background. A handsome design, beautifully detailed with embossing in the beauties' white kimono.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, attached at the seams and lightly toned throughout. Multiple small holes and tears in subject and along edges. Slight remnants from previous backing on reverse with minor soiling near top edge. Please see photos for details. Gently vertical creases along inside edges with areas of wrinkling in subject. Good overall.
