Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Catching Fireflies, 1855

Comments - Terrific five-panel kabuki scene of otokodate or street knights catching fireflies along the river's edge. Two of the men swat at the glowing insects with fans, while another fellow holds a small decorative cage. Each is dressed in a boldly patterned plaid kimono and tall wooden geta sandals, with a white towel over his shoulders or around his neck. A lovely nighttime scene with blossoming iris bordering the wooden walkway. From left, the actor in the first panel is Kataoka Gado II as Yasuno Taira Hyoe. The actor in the fourth panel is Bando Takesaburo as Gokuin Sen'emon. The actor in the fifth panel is Nakamura Fukusuke as Hotei Shi'emon. A charming print with wonderful detail and soft shading in the water and night sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 47 1/8"

Faint spotting and soiling in subject with light paper remnants from previous backing on reverse of second to last right-hand panel. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
