Series; One Hundred Roles of Baiko

One Hundred Roles of Baiko - In 1893, Kunichika was commissioned to create the series "One Hundred Roles of Baiko," chronicling the diverse characters played by the famous actor Onoe Kikugoro V, whose pen name was "Baiko." These fantastic prints feature a large portrait of Kikugoro V in one of his major roles, along with a small scene showing a supporting actor from the same play. These exquisite images were printed to the highest standards, using expensive techniques and materials such as burnishing, embossing, and mica. Beautifully drawn and composed, each print demonstrates Kunichika's skill in creating expressive characters, bringing each role to life on the page. A great choice for a kabuki enthusiast or Kunichika collector.

Message in Blood - Dramatic portrait of Baiko as high-ranking Chinese official So Sokei, who came to Japan to plot an invasion. When his plan was discovered, he was forced to commit suicide. He wrote a dying message in his own blood on a white cloth, which a hawk dropped at the feet of his true son, a robber who later avenged his death. The bearded nobleman holds the cloth in one hand, still bleeding from the little finger on his other hand. He looks over his shoulder somewhat furtively, hoping to complete his message before anyone discovers what he is doing. The inset above shows Sukedakaya Takasuke IV as a young nobleman in formal court dress, wearing a black robe and tall court cap. A handsome design with elegant burnished detail in the black cap and black robe, and embossing on the white kimono collar. An intriguing scene.
