Taira no Tomomori and Scene from The Subscription List

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych depicting two different scenes relating to the life of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The scene at right is taken from "The Subscription List," when Yoshitsune and his men tried to sneak across the Ataka Border disguised as yamabushi or mountain priests. Benkei sits at right clutching a string of prayer beads, frowning unhappily as the woman in the center points a fan towards the kneeling Yoshitsune. Above him, the ghost of Taira no Tomomori appears against a dark blue background. Facing defeat at the hands of the Minamoto during the Battle of Dan-no-Ura, Tomomori tied himself to an anchor and leapt overboard to his death. Here, he grips a naginata in his hand, his long wet hair streaming around his face. Nicely detailed with touches of burnishing and vibrant color.

Artist - Kunichika (1904 - 1974)

Image Size - 14" x 28" + margins as shown
