Yoritomo's Hunt at the Foot of Mount Fuji

Comments - Incredible image of the Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo's hunt at the foot of Mt. Fuji in 1193. The scene is one of chaos as riders pursue a stream of prey that rushes across the foreground, including deer, rabbits, and foxes. On the hill in the center, a group of samurai on foot use bamboo brooms to flush the animals towards the archers, with the shogun following behind on a dappled horse. At bottom right, the fearless samurai Tadatsune grapples with a giant wild boar that attacked the party, grasping it by the tail and back as he grips his knife between his teeth. Broken arrows protrude from its body as the wounded boar snarls and tosses is head back in pain. Just above, a monkey falls from a pine tree, pierced by an arrow shot by the archer on a black horse in the center. A fantastic, lively scene filled with energy and action, wonderfully detailed. A rare Sadahide triptych and a great depiction of this classic hunt.
