Nun and Boatman, 1863

Comments - Terrific diptych featuring a scene from the play commonly known as "Onna Seigen." The nun Seigen has been reduced to a beggar, but the boatman Sota is obsessed with her. After refusing his advances, he becomes enraged and attacks and kills her. Here, Seigen stands at left with a sweet smile, clutching a tattered, partially closed umbrella over her head. She wears a flowing purple robe with a blue cowl around her neck, her head shaved after taking vows. Sota leans back on the grass at right, frowning angrily and throwing his hand out in front of him. A sudden storm sends a bolt of orange lightening zigzagging across the sky above. The actors are Sawamura Tanosuke as Seigen and Bando Hikosaburo V as Sarushima Sota. A great design with large expressive figures and an attractive setting, the softly shaded sky framed by a blossoming cherry tree. Includes embossing in the white kimono trim.
