Nakamura Utaemon IV, 1839

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of the actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in a role from the play "Monogusa Taro." He stands under an umbrella in the falling snow, looking over his shoulder with a worried frown. His olive print kimono is worn over pants and tucked up at the waist for easier movement, and he has a blue scarf wrapped around his head against the cold air. He even has covers over the ends of his tall geta sandals to help keep his toes dry. The snow-covered rooftops of the city spread in the distance, with the peak of a temple building at left, and a stone pillar framing the view at right. An attractive design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 10"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Lightly toned throughout with a few small stains in subject. Some small holes, repaired from reverse with minor creasing throughout subject. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
