Original Toyokuni I (1769 - 1825) Japanese Woodblock Print
Mirror of the Actors' Own Handwriting

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of two beauties relaxing along the bank of a river in summer. The woman at left smiles happily as she carries a small insect cage dangling from a cord, a round fan decorated with iris in her other hand. She wears a sheer black kimono patterned with crosshatches over a red under robe, tied with a brocade obi. The beauty at right leans back on a bench looking over her shoulder, a slender pipe in hand. A tobacco set and a fan rest on the seat beside her. Her lavender plaid kimono features a maple leaf print, and she wears tall wooden geta sandals. Bush clover shrubs covered with tiny pink blossoms line the swiftly moving water. A charming design, attractively colored and detailed.
