Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of a group of firemen, each dressed in a heavy padded and quilted jacket. The fellow in the center holds a red paper lantern aloft with an unhappy frown, an axe or pick tucked under his other arm. His robe features an image of a man playing a flute on one sleeve, with a fierce dragon on the other and waves below. The fireman at right stands beside a fringed company standard called a matoi. His jacket has a design of a warrior wading across a river with a sword clenched between his teeth, lifting what might be a giant serpent above his head. Wonderful color and fantastic detail in this fascinating design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few pinpoint holes, not noticeable. A few faint stains, slight soiling and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
