Beauties Sewing

Comments - Charming triptych of a group of beauties spending the afternoon sewing. A woman at right measures a length of lavender silk with a ruler, a pair of scissors on the floor before her and a sewing chest nearby. At left, a beauty irons a kimono flat using a brass container filled with hot coals. A kitten with a red ruffled collar perches on the shoulder of the beauty in the center. A wonderful scene with fine detail in the fabrics and household items. An attractive view of upper-class life in old Japan.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and lightly toned along top margin. One stain in right-hand panel with faint spotting and soiling in subject. Slight creasing along edges and corners with remnants from previous backing on reverse. One area of thinning and tearing in right-hand panel, repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
