Series; Edo Customs of the Twelve Months

Eighth Month: Moon-viewing party - Charming Chikanobu triptych of beauties enjoying a moon-viewing party in August. In the center, a beauty plays the koto while a woman behind her carries in a tray piled with sweets. A larger tray on the floor is heaped with colorful flowers and sweets in the form of rabbits, an offering tray of graduated red sake cups and a sake kettle nearby. The woman at right sits on a cushion, leaning against an elegant lacquer armrest, a fan in hand. A full yellow moon glows softly behind the pine branches framing the garden. A handsome design from a rarely seen series, detailed with touches of embossing in the white kimono trim.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/8" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and backed with thin paper. Faint spotting and ink offsetting in subject. Minor soiling and rubbing along edges with areas of wrinkling throughout. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
