Urashima Taro Opening the Box

Comments - A terrific original Utamaro print depicting the fisherman Urashima Taro opening the box gifted to him by the Dragon Princess. In the classic story, the fisherman rescues a turtle and is rewarded with a visit to the Palace of the Dragon King. After visiting for 3 days, he returns to his home to find that 300 years had passed. As he was leaving, the Dragon Princess gave him the gift of a box, but told him not to open it because it would protect him. Upon discovering that 300 years had passed and everyone he knew was gone, he absent-mindedly opened the box and instantly turned into an old man. The Dragon Princess appeared before him and admonished him for opening the box as it contained his old age.
