Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Meiji Emperor Reviewing Troops

Comments - Interesting triptych depicting the Meiji Emperor reviewing troops during military exercises. He trots across the field on a white horse, wearing a fine black uniform and hat topped with a plum. Rows of troops stand at attention around the edge of the parade ground, with an officer on horseback at left flanked by a flag bearer. At right, the elegant Imperial carriage waits, and the heads of a few well-dressed upper-class women can be seen among the crowd in the center. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed, with Mt. Fuji rising against a red sky scattered with clouds.
