Futakawa: View of Sarugababa

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Gyosho Tokaido), 1841 - 1844

Hiroshige's Gyosho Tokaido - After the incredible success of Hiroshige's original Hoeido or Great Tokaido in the 1830s, the artist designed several other series illustrating life along the Tokaido road. Named after the style in which the series title is written, the Gyosho Tokaido was published around 1841 - 1844. It features lively scenes focusing on the activities of travelers, winding through a rocky valley or climbing a steep mountain, pausing for a rest or stopping in a busy village or port. These charming designs are attractively colored and most feature fine bokashi shading. A nice complement to the more commonly seen Great Tokaido.

Futakawa: View of Sarugababa - After the incredible success of Hiroshige’s original Hoeido Tokaido in the 1830s, the artist designed several other series illustrating life along the Tokaido road. The Gyosho Tokaido was published around 1841 - 1844, and prints from this series are rarely seen. Here, travelers stop at the Sarugababa rest stop at the edge of the Sarugababa Plains. One man relaxes on a bench, drinking a cup of tea while two other men chat before him. At right, a mother carries a baby on her back as she leads a small boy by the hand. They pass a woman spreading something out to dry on a straw mat beneath the trees. An attractive design and a nice complement to Hiroshige's more well-known Tokaido series.
