Assembling for the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. The castle sat on a narrow strip of land with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Minamoto no Yoshitsune split his men into three groups, sending a small detachment of men high into the mountains above the fortress, and other troops to the east and west along the coast. At the appointed time, all three attacked. Here, the troops assemble on the beach, with Yoshitsune sitting astride a black horse at left with his loyal retainer, the warrior monk Benkei, standing at his side gripping a naginata. Two men approach in the center, bowing respectfully, while behind the, ships unload men on the beach. The horizon is crowded with the sails of ships coming to land troops for the assault. A great image of the preparations for war. Nicely detailed and colored.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 29 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, attached at the seams, backed with paper. Two small holes, repaired, blends well. Faint stain in center panel, very slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
