Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Ejiri: The Pine Tree of the Feather Robe at Miho no Matsubara, 1855 - Terrific design from a collaborative series by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III known as "The Tokaido by Two Brushes." Here, Toyokuni III depicts the beautiful deity from the famous story of "The Feather Robe." A fisherman finds a magical feather robe belonging to a Tennin, a heavenly Buddhist spirit, hanging upon a pine tree and takes it home. The Tennin, who cannot fly without the robe, pleads with the fisherman to return it to her. He finally agrees, but only if she will dance for him, so she performs a wonderful dance and is able to return to heaven. She is shown here flying up into the sky with her glorious feather mantle trailing behind her in the breeze, a green brocade sash fluttering about her. Below, Hiroshige depicts the landscape at Miho no Matsubara, where the story takes place, the green shore thickly covered with a grove of pine trees. Sails dot the water and the peak of Mt. Fuji rises high above a line of gray mountains. A lovely image from this rarely seen series, beautifully colored and detailed.
