The Death of Officer Murata, 1877 - Dramatic depiction of the death of Officer Murata at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. Leader Saigo Takamori's second-in-command, the brave warrior stands in ground in the center under fire by Japanese troops, gripping a spear with one foot resting atop his fallen horse. His armor is dripping with blood from many wounds, but he stares ahead defiantly, the wild blowing his hair and beard. Other wounded and dying men litter the ground at left as rebels rush forward at left, General Saigo riding a white horse and wearing a plumed hat. A Japanese officer raises his sword high at left under a billowing Japanese flag amidst clouds of smoke. A fantastic image from this historic conflict, with fine realistic figures and soft shading in the sky and clouds. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection.

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached the seams. A few small pinpoint holes along edges, repaired from reverse. Faint staining and spotting in subject. Light rubbing and soiling in margins. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
