Music Competition of Beauties, 1891

Comments - Lovely triptych of a group of upper-class beauties enjoying an evening of music. In the center, one woman plays a kokyu, an instrument similar to a shamisen but played upright with a bow, while the beauty sitting in the foreground plays the shamisen. The two beauties at right play a flute and koto, while a young girl hands the koto player a small red lacquer box. At left, a woman carries in a tray of refreshments for her guests. They are gathered in the interior of a fine home, with a small bonsai tree in a niche at left next to shelves holding a stack of books and a Western-style clock. The verandah opens onto an attractive garden framed by a pine tree and stone lantern at right. A wonderful subject for a collector interested in music, beautifully detailed and colored. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
