The Great Battle between Kai Province and Echigo Province at Kawanakajima, 1856

Comments - Terrific depiction from the 16th century Battle of Kawanakajima between the forces of Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen. In the center, Usami Suruga no Kami, one of Kenshin's famous generals, thrusts his spear at Yamagata Saburohei, one of Shingen's trusted leaders. Yamagata counters the blow with his sword, the two men glaring at each other with bulging eyes. Troops fight with swords and spears on the ground below, charging each other in direct combat. Other samurai are massed on the plain below, their tightly packed helmets and banners rising above the edge of the hill. Dark smoke billows into the night sky, obscuring the battled in the distance. A fantastic composition with the two major figures beautifully and boldly rendered. Lively color and lots of detail in the great warrior triptych. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A fine subject for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.
