Minamoto no Yoritomo at the Sumida River, circa 1842 - 1843

Comments - Interesting scene of Minamoto no Yoritomo and his retainers during a ceremony in 1180 on the shore of the Sumida River. Yoritomo sits on a stool in the center, wearing a suit of armor with the Minamoto paulownia crest on the chest plate and a horned battle helmet topped with a dragon. Just before him, Hojo Tokimasa presents a naginata to the warrior Hatakeyama Shigetada, who leans forward with his hands outstretched to receive the weapon. A group of armored samurai sits around Yoritomo, while others on horseback and on foot are gathered in a circle around the men in the center. A variety of colorful pennants and standards flutter overhead, with birds dotting the edge of the marshy water in the distance. Wonderful color and detail in the expressive figures, armor, and equipment.
