Series; Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji

Hiroshige's Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji - In Japan, Mt. Fuji is a sacred place and a symbol of the country itself. Rising majestically near the center of Japan, Fuji dominates the landscape and the Japanese national identity. Hiroshige completed designs for his last series, "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," in 1858. Following a tradition established by Hokusai, Hiroshige’s wonderful series show the mountain in each of the four seasons, from a variety of vantage points. Hiroshige utilized a vertical full oban format to create dramatic and breathtaking views of this most revered landmark. Views range from the urban city center of Edo to cherry blossom viewing in a small village and the fantastic crashing wave at Awa. Seen less frequently than some of his more well-known series, "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" ranks as one of Hiroshige's best vertical format series.

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

The Suruga District in the Eastern Capital - Terrific view of busy Suruga-cho street in Edo, with an elderly samurai encountering musicians playing shamisen and flute as they stroll along. The large department store Echigoya lines the street, its crest featured prominently on the blue curtains covering the shops. The building is decorated with sacred shimenawa ropes for a festival celebration. The composition leads the eye down the street to a view of Mt. Fuji in the distance, with a few birds fluttering in the sky above. A great scene from city life in old Edo, nicely colored and shaded.
