by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) and Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes
Maisaka: Today's Maritime Scenery, 1855 - Intriguing image from a Hiroshige and Toyokuni III collaborative series known as "The Tokaido by Two Brushes." In the foreground, three young blind women are traveling through the countryside, each carrying a cloth bundle over her back and using a walking stick. The first woman rests a shamisen over her shoulder, a dotted cloth tied around her head partially concealing her face. The woman in the center smiles happily, her striped kimono tucked up at the waist for easier movement. The landscape above by Hiroshige depicts a beautiful ocean view along a rocky coast dotted with pine trees. Nicely colored and detailed with fine bokashi shading.
