Actors with Poems - Terrific kabuki print from an untitled series by Toyokuni III dating from 1861 to 1864. Each print features a half-length portrait of a popular actor in an imagined role, accompanied by a poem in a wood grain cartouche. Gengyo Miyagi designed most of the attractive landscape backgrounds. Dating from the last years of his life, these images demonstrate Toyokuni III's skill in creating expressive and finely nuanced portraits. Many feature luxurious printing touches, such as burnishing or embossing. A fine actor series by the artist, and a wonderful choice for the kabuki enthusiast.

Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Oboshi Yuranosuke, 1862 - Handsome portrait of Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Oboshi Yuranosuke in the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura." He is shown outside the palace after learning that Lord Hangan has just committed suicide. He stares over his shoulder with a grim frown, determined to avenge his master's death. He wears a dotted kamishimo over a black kimono with a pale blue collar, and holds a lantern in his hand. The courtyard of the mansion extends behind him under the evening sky. A poignant image from this popular drama.

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Lightly toned in margins with a few small wormholes and tears along edges, repaired from reverse. One horizontal crease running through subject with minor rubbing along edge. Faint soiling and spotting in subject and along edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
