The Spirit of the Cherry Tree, 1860

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych of a scene from a popular play "Seki no To" about the Spirit of the Cherry Tree. The barrier guard Sekibei, who has been drinking at the home of the nobleman Munesada, leans forward aggressively as a lovely courtesan appears outside the garden gate under a blossoming cherry tree. She is actually the spirit of the cherry tree, come to do battle with Sekibei, who attempted to chop down the tree while drunk. Munesada watches from the right with a worried expression, clutching his sleeve to his chest. He wears a purple coat patterned with flowers and leaves over a blue kimono with a similar design. Snow falls against the dark night sky, frame by the flowering branches overhead. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III as Komachihime, Nakamura Shikan IV as Sekimori Sekibei, and Arashi Hiyokosuke VII as Shosho Munesada. A terrific design with lively figures and an attractive setting.
