Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Otsuka and Marutsuka Mountain

Comments - Interesting print depicting two different scenes from a kabuki play based on the tale of the "Hakkenden," the Eight Dog Warriors. The top illustration, titled "Otsuka," shows an older man threatening a matron with a sword, waving it over her head as a young man watches anxiously from the doorway at right. The older couple looks very distraught, as does the young man. The image below, titled "Marutsuka Mountain," depicts the samurai Inuyama Dosetsu brandishing a sword as he looks up, the beauty Hamaji kneeling at his feet. The samurai Inugawa Gakuzo stands at left, hunching forward with a worried frown. A stone marker behind the beauty depicts three toads, and a full moon glows in the night sky beyond the pine trees. A handsome design with wonderful detail in the settings.
