Poem by Nakatsukasa: Onoe Kikugoro III as Yasukata no Borei

Series; Parody of the Thirty-six Poets, 1852

Poem by Nakatsukasa: Onoe Kikugoro III as Yasukata no Borei - Fantastic depiction of Onoe Kikugoro III as the ghost of Yasukata haunting the ruins of Soma Castle at Sashima. He looks down with a miserable expression as a supernatural flame dances in the sky before him, his eyes wide. His face is shaded with pale blue around the eyes, his lips gray and hair wild. He clutches a handful of striped poles to his chest, blood trickling over his shoulders. A pine trees frames a view of a distant mountain in blue silhouette against the night sky, with grasses waving below. A terrific image from this rarely seen series, with wonderful line work in the hair. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
