The Great Battle of the Ane River in the Taiheiki, 1867

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Battle of Anegawa between the combined forces of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu and the Azai and Asakura Clans. The battle turned into a melee in the middle of the shallow Ane River. Here, troops are gathered behind a row of tree trunks along the shore, gathering wounded and firing at oncoming enemies. In the center, a warrior fires at a samurai on the opposite shore, who is knocked backwards by the force, throwing up his hand and knee while another man falls in front of him. At left, Three men assisted a wounded compatriot, helping to hold him up, while others lie on the ground nearby. Clouds of smoke billow into the night sky, creating an ominous atmosphere. An intriguing early warrior triptych by Yoshitoshi, with expressive figures and soft bokashi shading in the smoke and sky.
