47 Ronin, Act 5, 1847

Comments - Terrific illustration of Act 5 from the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura." On the Yamazaki Highway one night, the villain Ono Sadakuro encounters the elderly Yoichibei, murdering him and robbing him of his money bag. At the same time, the ronin Hayano Kampei has been out hunting wild boar. Hearing a noise in the dark he fires, then moves towards the sound to investigate the shot. Here, he holds up the end of a burning rope used for his matchlock gun, peering into the darkness with a solemn expression as he discovers his mistake, having accidentally shot Sadakuro. At right, Sadakuro vomits blood as he leans forward, his chest and hands covered with blood from the mortal wound. His face is shaded with blue around his eyes, a sign of his impending death. From left the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Hayano Kampei, and Bando Hikosaburo IV as Ono Sadakuro. A great image from this popular tale, with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
