Truthful Images Old and New: Various Thoughts on Ukiyo-e
Around the Year Tensho 3 (1575): Yamauchi Kazutoyo and His Wife, 1885 - Handsome diptych depicting the samurai Yamauchi Kazutoyo and his wife, Chiyo. The wise and beautiful woman helped her husband to rise to the position of Governor of Tosa Province. Here, she removes the backing from a hand mirror to recover the money she had safely hidden there. She kneels beside a small black lacquer chest with a mirror case atop it, her long hair flowing over her shoulders. Her husband stands at right with a proud expression on his face, one hand balancing atop his sword. Their home is rather shabby, with cracks in the walls and holes in the plaster. A groom waits outside the doorway holding a rope tied to a horse, with a blossoming plum tree framing the view. An attractive design from this rarely seen Kiyochika series.
