Nun and Visitors, 1838

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Koi no nada nebiki no Tomozuna" of the nun Meigetsu at a rustic country home, visited by two men. She sits at a low black lacquer desk with a scroll tumbling onto the floor, grinning wildly as she stares at the men. A young man in the center smiles kindly back at her, a string of prayer beads in his extended hand. He wears a tan and white print kimono, and has a blue robe patterned with peonies and maple leaves draped over his shoulder. At left, his yakko or servant leans back in surprise, scratching his head in astonishment. He carries his master's sword upright, and wears a boldly patterned black kimono with a distinctive striped collar. The country setting is beautifully detailed with a grassy slope and weeping cherry blossoms framing a softly shaded blue sky. Iwai Tojaku I appears as the nun Meigetsu. An attractive design.
