Maiko Dancing, 1936 - In 1936, Shuho designed a series of ten shin hanga woodblocks illustrating traditional Japanese dancers. This attractive image from the series depicts a maiko or apprentice geisha performing a dance. She kneels on the floor, leaning forward with her kimono sleeves gracefully spread like wings. She wears a orange robe patterned with bouquets of flowers and lined in red, her hair adorned with clusters of tiny flowers and colorful ribbons. Prints by Shuho are rare, and this is a terrific example of his charming beauty subjects. A great choice for a shin hanga collector.
